The Root Center

Our Mission

The Root Center is dedicated to the easement of the basic stressors of human life (providing food, water, shelter, energy and community) through the intelligent application of simple technologies, thereby building a cornerstone for a worldwide network of abundance to give every human being the time and dignity to lead fulfilling lives and elevate the quality of life for all.

We will integrate nature and technology, traditional and modern. In this process we will enable profound community development through a strong foundation of the basic infrastructure of community living. Community centers will be established to provide the tools and resources to explore humanity's creative potential.

Service Geographics

The Root Center serves the Chittenden County area with a total population in excess of 147,000 people. Over 50% of the county's population lives in Burlington. The remaining bulk of the county's population resides in Shelburne, Winooski, Essex Junction, Williston, and Colchester.

Service Demographics

It is estimated that 20% of the county's residents are low-income. Of the county's 30,000 low income residents, 25% are seniors, 30% are individual adults, and 45% are children. Family groupings represent over 64% of low income residents in Chittenden County. Over 90% of these families have at least one family member working full time. This is why children and their families are the focus of the program.  In addition, low-income families are affected the most by rising energy costs, which further prevents them from purchasing quality food.
